About
The Municipal Theatre of Tunis is the historic hall of avenue Habib-Bourguiba, in the heart of the city centre. It opened on 20 November 1902 as the Casino municipal, designed by the architect Jean-Émile Resplandy in the Art Nouveau style, and was rebuilt behind its original facade between 1909 and 1911 to reach its present size. The horseshoe-shaped hall seats about 1,350 people on four levels. It hosts Tunisian and Arab theatre, classical and malouf concerts, dance and the main dates of the capital's cultural season, including part of the Carthage Theatre Days.
The hall
A horseshoe hall of about 1,350 seats on four levels, from the stalls to the balconies. The seats nearest the stage are in the stalls; the upper levels give a full view for concerts and dance.
The white Art Nouveau facade is one of the landmarks of avenue Habib-Bourguiba. The 1909-1911 works kept only that facade and redrew the whole interior.
Tickets
Each show has its own box office: at the theatre's counter on the avenue, and online depending on the organiser. The dates listed above say, for each one, where the ticket is sold.
Getting there
The theatre faces avenue Habib-Bourguiba at the corner of rue de Grèce. Walk along the avenue from the Tunis Marine TGM station or from place de l'Indépendance; the city-centre light-rail stops are a few minutes away.
The area is busy in the evening: allow time to park, or take a taxi.
