Mactaris sits on a plateau more than 900 m high in the High Tell; it was founded under the Numidian kingdom around the end of the 5th century BC and later became a Roman colony. Highlights are the Arch of Trajan by the forum, baths fortified by the Byzantines, an amphitheatre, churches and a museum.
