Hammamet Open-Air Theatre

About

Hammamet's open-air theatre is the stage of the Hammamet International Festival. Built between 1962 and 1964 by the Atelier d'architecture et d'urbanisme on the model of ancient theatres, it opened on 31 July 1964 in the presence of Habib Bourguiba, the very evening of the festival's first edition, with Othello directed by Aly Ben Ayed. Its 1,100 tiered seats overlook the sea, in the gardens of Dar Sebastian, the villa the Romanian Georges Sebastian built in the 1920s, today the Hammamet International Cultural Centre. Every summer, from July to August, the festival lines up concerts, theatre and dance; the rest of the year the centre hosts residencies, talks and exhibitions.

The theatre

Semicircular tiers of 1,100 seats, open to the sky, with the sea behind the stage. Every seat faces the stage; the upper rows catch the evening breeze.

Evenings start after sunset and can run late: bring something warm, even in August.
