A very large salt flat in the interior between Sousse, Kairouan and Mahdia, worked for salt at its edges and flooded in winter. Shallow brine turns pink and green in patches, and flamingos and waders feed on the margins.

- Keep off the salt flat itself; the crust is thin and vehicles sink. Salt extraction operates on parts of the sebkha.
