L'Ecurie: the private cultural club on rue d'Autriche

8 rue d'Autriche, on the corner of rue du Venezuela: L'Ecurie is a private cultural club in Tunis that houses a record shop, a chess club, a comedy club, jazz, amateur cinema and club nights. Full programme, access, membership.

The name means what it says: a stable. The place writes it in three languages, L'Ecurie, الكوري, 馬厩, and describes itself as a private cultural club. The address is 8 rue d'Autriche, on the corner of rue du Venezuela, between Lafayette and Belvedere, Tunis 1002. Since January 2026 almost everything in Tunis that has no room of its own has passed through it: a record shop, a chess club, a comedy club, jazz concerts, amateur cinema, film photography workshops, a street football world cup.

A club, not a venue

L'Ecurie is not a bar or a concert hall: it is a private members club, run by a collective that signs itself Hmdlh Bravo Club, in Arabic حمدوﷲ برافو كليب, in Chinese 讚美上帝俱樂部. The three languages are not a detail: everything the place posts goes out in Arabic, in French or English, and in Chinese, down to its own section headings, الأندية / Clubs / 俱樂部, الفعاليات / Events / 事件. It is a way of saying what it claims elsewhere in one word: intergenerational, بين الأجيال.

The rule of entry is posted plainly: if you are an artist, a cultural worker or simply someone who loves art and culture, you are welcome; collaborators and partners too, as long as they are not competitors. The place is open seven days a week, 21 and over, non-smoking and wheelchair accessible.

The calendar tells the story of a slow opening. The account posts its first pictures of rue d'Autriche in the summer of 2025, under the title "Austria street, a true story". Registration for the chess club, run by master Slim Bouaziz, opens in November 2025, by message or by phone between noon and 6pm, Monday to Sunday. The place closes for the week between Christmas and New Year, reopens in pre-opening on 5 January 2026, restarts on 30 March with hours of 8am to 10pm seven days a week, and announces in the autumn that the official opening has been pushed back. In other words: by autumn 2026 the place is running, programming and hosting, and its inauguration date is still to come.

What happened there in 2026

The record shop inside the club

Since April 2026, Eddisco Records has occupied a corner of L'Ecurie. The shop and label, opened in 2018 in a Lafayette apartment and listed by The Vinyl Factory among the world's best record shops, moved its crates a few steps from its old address. Monday to Sunday, 10am to 10pm, by appointment, with coffee and soft drinks on site.

It is the detail that best explains how the place works: L'Ecurie is a members club, but seeing Eddisco only takes a message. You book, you walk in, you dig. Since October 2026 the shop has also run Live Experiment there, a series of live performances in the store, the first being a dub and reggae set by Adubtation.
