The working saltpans south of Sfax, a chain of shallow evaporation basins that has become one of the most important wader sites on the Gulf of Gabes. Flamingos, avocets, slender-billed gulls and thousands of small waders use the pans through the winter.

A PERMIT IS NEEDED TO VISIT

- The saltworks are private industrial property; birdwatching access is arranged with the operator or a local guide.
- GUIDE
- Recommended, both for access and for finding the productive pans.
- SEASON
- Autumn to spring for waders and wintering flamingos.
- RULES
- Keep to the dykes and do not disturb roosting flocks; the pans are an active salt works with vehicle traffic.
