Corps Perdu is an immersive multisensory performance offering a glimpse into Lamin Fofana’s ongoing sound works inspired by seminal African diasporic writers, historians, poets, and theorists such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Sylvia Wynter, Suzanne Césaire, and Aimé Césaire. Corps Perdu continues Fofana’s practice of transmuting text into sound, drawing inspiration from a 1948 book of poetry by Aimé Césaire, illustrated by Pablo Picasso. The album observes a transitional moment in Césaire’s poetry when youthful mercurial fervor is weighted down with the elegiac introspection of time and maturity. Abrupte violence and unfulfilled desires permeate the ten-track suite, which unfolds in a fugal structure.
